Lotsa rice and plenty of art too

There's always something nice about listening to the sound of my sweetheart from six blocks away. Stan's band, The Rafters, was playing at the Katy Rice Festival this Saturday. Which meant I got to drive twenty miles out of down, park my car under a shade tree and, like a she-bird heeding the call of love, search for my mate among throngs of festival goers spanning twelve city blocks.
I found him on the main stage, tuning his red guitar. I was in charge of taking photographs and writing something in this blog for posterity and to show our combined children that we are still cool and rock'n rolly in our middle years.
I loved everything about the Katy Rice Festival: the SPCA booth, the High-School cheerleader booth, the red paper boutonnieres from the WWF, the Spin-the-wheel game where you could win packages of instant rice, and the Spin-the-wheel game where you could win either copies of the Bible or coupons to Chick-Fil-A (I won a coupon for a small cone of Chick-Fil-A ice cream).
I liked the banner that urged festival-goers to drink beer and eat rice, a combination I had not thought of before. I salivated at the prospect of an extra large funnel cake with chocolate syrup. Or a gyros with extra onion.
I bought half of Brandy Stoesz stock of origami wallet, which were a steal at a mere $1 a piece. Brandy ("Welcome to the smallest booth at the Rice Festival") also sold homemade buttons and experimental soap. And she made beautiful photographs which unfortunately weren't for sale. Check her incredible web page. She is talented.
And then I drooled over Laura Neal's "Drooling Over Yarn".
"I go to bed at night thinking what color I am going to dye my yarn in the morning," Laura explained from under the canopy of her well-shaded booth. She had skeins of yarn labeled - among other things - "Summer Field", "Swamp Thing" and "Purple Princess". I can't resist anyone who would call her yarn "Swamp Thing". Never mind I didn't have enough cash. Laura pointed the way to the nearest ATM and promptly wrapped two skeins of yarn in a nice tissue paper tied with a purple ribbon.
Had I not ran out of money, I was so happy, I could have spent the rest of the afternoon looping in the ferris wheel with my ears tuned to my sweetheart's music. Art. Beer. Art. Rice. Spin-the Wheel. More art. My sweetheart. Rice. Everything at my fingertips. What a day!
